| Dollar - Doomed At 1.45?
The worst of the lot included housing starts which dropped more than 10% and jobless claims which swelled to 337K against 312K expected. The news pushed the Fed Funds futures to a 75% chance of a rate cut in October dragging the dollar to new lows. To add insult to injury the TICs data proved shockingly weak, printing at -$69 Billion versus $60 Billion projected. Many analysts noted that the vast majority of the outflow was in equities during the massive liquidation in August. With equity markets having recaptured and exceeded their record highs, the expectation for next month is that many of these negative capital flows will reverse. Although the prospect of an October rate hike is quite real, as we noted in our brief on Friday, "Chairman Bernanke must be aware that further monetary easing so soon after the 50bp cut in September, would immediately spur speculation of yet more cuts before the year end and could easily push the EURUSD to the 1.4500 figure within a matter of weeks, destabilizing an already woefully weak dollar." Next week the US calendar is relatively uneventful with yet more housing data and durable goods on the docket.
Phillies' closer Lidge says his knee is healthy
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Somewhere in Haddonfield, N.J., sits a suburban house with a ballplayer's wife and a 3-year-old daughter. It's a nice place, Brad Lidge says. Safe, quiet and comfortable, yet not so big that his wife gets lost when he is on the road. Lidge is happy with it. But know this: He's renting. "Maybe we'll buy it next year,'' the 31-year-old closer said, a wry grin creeping across his face. "We'll see what happens.'' Yes, the stakes surrounding Lidge's performance this season are as high as the elevations in his native Colorado, and he acknowledged it by arriving 3 full days before the first official workout of this Phillies spring training. He is in a contract year, with a surgically repaired right knee, coming off a disappointing end to his 6-year career in Houston.
Ivanhoe Mines Announces Q3 2007 Results
The principal activities included engineering for the diesel power station, which will provide construction power to the project, and engineering on the Gunii Hooloi bore field, which will serve as a permanent water source for the mine. Oyu Tolgoi block-cave planning advances Block-cave planning for the Hugo Dummett Deposit continued during Q3'07 with the commencement of a detailed study of the first production lift. This study will extend throughout 2008 and will incorporate the findings of the characterization drift. This drift will provide the geotechnical parameters to determine the detailed block-cave footprint design and mine development requirements. Additionally, information from the characterization drift will provide data for the underground engineering design criteria that will be used to optimize the production schedule and to upgrade the underground resources to reserves.
Boy--Casualties of the Gender War
The current theories (now coming into question) of the inferior treatment of girls in the schools were, in the main, authored and promoted by Harvard's Carol Gilligan, whose papers, written between 1982 and 1990, were followed by a cascade of articles written by popular writers embracing Gilligan's assertions. At the same time as the Gilligan studies were being published and re-published, a study at the University of Michigan was showing that between 86 and 88% of the students (male and female) were happy, and unaware of the "accelerating downward spiral" cited by Gilligan and her colleagues.v,vi,vii Newer studies (1995-98) are beginning to cast more doubt on Gilligan's research. Even Gilligan has expressed some new ideas which seem to modify her previous position, and she more recently (1996) stated the "boys show a high incidence of depression, out-of-control behavior, learning disorders, even allergies and stuttering".
