| Moffitt House got up and went
If you think you saw an old, two-story house moving along a Hallandale Beach road Sunday morning, you weren't hallucinating. It was actually the 90,000-pound, 102-year-old Moffitt House. Local historians say it is Broward County's second-oldest standing residence after the Stranahan House in Fort Lauderdale. Developers moved all 2,450 square feet of the historic home, made of sturdy Dade County pine, from its original location at 134 S. Dixie Hwy. to a few blocks south next to another historic home, the 84-year-old Curci House at 324 SW Second Ave. The hourlong feat was accomplished by Brownie Moving and Heavy Hauling, based in Fort Pierce. ''It went very smoothly,'' said developer Richard Shan, 45, noting the event had been planned for about a year.
Tesoro, Seawater AC, Hoku Scientific and Wall Street
Tesoro, owner of the larger of Hawaii's two refineries, says gasoline price margins have shrunk so it will make less gasoline. Tesoro says its Kapolei refinery will be dialed back to as little as 74% capacity. Here's an alternative to oil for downtown office buildings. Honolulu Seawater Air Conditioning has lined up more than 10 million dollars in equity financing. U.S. and Swedish investors are chipping in for a zero emissions seawater air conditioning plant. Downtown building owners could save a fifth of their air conditioning costs by using seawater instead of a system-based on freon. Hoku Scientific has installed two solar power systems on neighbor islands. Its newest turnkey photovoltaic systems are at the Lihue and Kona operations of Paradise Beverages. The company uses a lot of power to refrigerate its warehouses, since it's the Hawaii distributor of Coors, Corona, Miller and Heineken.
48 killed as tornadoes wreak havoc in US
Violent storms and tornadoes ripped through five southern US states late yesterday and early today, killing at least 48 people and injuring more than 100 others. The powerful winds destroyed homes, flattened warehouses and collapsed the roof of a shopping mall. The victims included 24 people in Tennessee, 13 in Arkansas, seven in Kentucky and four in Alabama. The severe storms moved eastwards this morning and tornado warnings were posted for Georgia and northern Florida, the New York Times said. In Arkansas, two parents and their 11-year-old daughter died after their home "took a direct hit" from the storm, the Pope County coroner, Leonard Krout, said. "Neighbours and friends who were there said: 'There used to be a home there,'" Krout said. Rescuers were carrying out door-to-door searches in an attempt to find more victims.
